Blurb: When ghost hunter and medium M.J. Holliday appears on a television show called Haunted Possessions, she encounters an evil knife that releases a demon. Now all hell has broken loose in the haunted hotel where M.J. is staying, and it's up to her to give the uninvited guest an early checkout.
Review: What kind of blurb is that??!! It just doesn't say much does it.....well let me tell you! M.J. is roped into taking a job in San Francisco where she will be doing readings on items that people think are haunted or possessed. The kicker is she will be filmed with an audience and working with three other psychics. The one thing I didn't mention is how Gilley, M.J.'s best friend, signed her up for it without asking her first!! After a lot of yelling and arm twisting, M.J. finally comes to terms with having to do this job, even though she has never heard of any of these "psychics" that the show has procured.
So, we are off to a great start, right? LOL! Poor M.J. Man, was she pissed at Gilley, and so was I!! Gosh, Gilley even talked to Steven, aka Dr. Delicious, about it first, wth? To dig the hole even deeper, the show's producer, Gopher, has arranged for the filming to take place at one of the most haunted hotels in America, The Duke, as well as being their accomodations, bahahaha.........ooooh, Gilley is dead meat!
When the trio arrives at the Duke, M.J. is already slapped in the face with her first ghost bust/crossover job. The woman can't even check in without being bombarded! This is how she is introduced to Detective Ayden MacDonald. He turns out to be very open minded about M.J. abilities, and a crucial asset in the end. After Gilley and Steven get them all checked in, M.J. is off to a Meet 'n Greet with the show's producer and other psychics that will be on the show. The intros to the others were not good, as she meets Angelica DeMarche, Bernard Higgins and Heath Whitefeather. They are discussing the woman M.J. encountered when arriving at the hotel and how she came to her untimely death. M.J. knew right off the bat that Angelica and Bernard were phonies. Heath seemed to be the only true psychic amongst them, along with M.J., and she was hoping to not get paired with the other two during filming.
The story takes on a whole new life when a dagger appears on the table during filming with no one to claim it. The whole atmosphere turns sour, and the true ghost busting begins! Let me just say how utterly upset I was with Gilley! He basically forced M.J.'s hand to take this job, and she was really against it! Then for him to NOT get it when she tried to explain to him how bad this could end up for her and their business! I was just screaming in my head, DENSE MUCH? Why aren't you understanding her!! This feeling of angst between them went on for most of the book, pretty much every time something horrible happened. Gilley was totally at fault, and he did not deserve any slack about it! I truly hope that he learned his lesson and doesn't pull this shit again in future books, or he will permanently stay on my shit list! Then, there is poor Steven. He only wants to help the business, but he's also torn with wanting M.J. to be safe, so he does see both sides, and right when things get dangerous, he has to go back to Boston for a lecture he is scheduled for. This little trip was only supposed to be over a weekend and turned into a week-long nightmare.
Heath and M.J. team up with Gil and Gopher to ghost bust the whole damn hotel and to face the most dangerous entity any of them has ever encountered! The in-depth story behind it all was such jaw-dropping genius that I never saw things coming, and it had me on edge until the end! M.J. always has something new and scary she discovers, and that it is what keeps me going with this series. Not once in the four books that I've read so far have I felt, oh, we been there, done that! This book opens up a whole new chapter for M.J., and I can't wait to get started with her on the next one :)
